Dear Fellow Expat:

I know exactly what I did wrong.

So, starting in the winter of my sophomore year of high school, my parents made me sit down and study at a glass dining room table. Three hours a night…

Even when I turned 18 in the spring of my junior year of high school, I was glued to that table. There, I read many books that shaped my life. I first read Hunter Thompson’s Fear and Loathing: On the Campaign Trail and Charles Kindleberger’s Manias, Panics, and Crashes.

During my senior year, when my father opened a restaurant (and they were always there Wednesday night through Saturday night), I was still working on AP Calculus after lacrosse practice.

My wife wonders why I still work at our dining room table - some 25 years after I walked out of high school.

Blame… or thank my parents.

Doesn’t matter which way you feel, but that is what developed my good behaviors around academics and ultimately markets… and my work ethic.

I’m thankful for all of it.
