Dear Fellow Expat:

This morning, we noted an embargoed Treasury Department document floating around Europe and Asia.

The supposed document outlined sanctions against Russia and other entities that had helped the nation circumvent global oil price caps. It turns out that the document was very true. Various mainstream publications have reported on these sanctions in the last 90 minutes. Meanwhile, European and Asian traders took profits, rugging U.S. investors who thought this announcement would send oil prices even higher.

I started diving into this at 10 am when the Treasury Department links went live.

This is a significant escalation of economic pressure on Russia.

"With today's actions, we are ratcheting up the sanctions risk associated with Russia's oil trade, including shipping and financial facilitation in support of Russia's oil exports," Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said.
