Postcards: High Stakes Gin Rummy in a "High End" Chinese Restaurant
The algorithms attacked again... right when I recommended that we hedge. Also, an update on shipping stocks and where we go next.
Dear Fellow Expat:
I flew to Baltimore yesterday to hang out with my father (after a family emergency).
He’s a young man with a lot of swagger.
“I’m the greatest card player in the world…” he yells… chest puffed… banging into Joey Chiu’s Greenspring Inn.
That “greatest” is limited to a 10-card Gin Rummy. But it’s good enough.
And today, at Joey Chiu’s (the best Chinese food in the history of mankind), he and I played gin rummy for cash.
Three games. High stakes. And I was beating him for a while…
But then… he went all Lebron James on me… and now I’m down money.
Here I thought I’d be able to pick up a few Berkshire B Shares (BRK.B) shares on Dorsey.
Nope.
The man might call me my brother’s name now and then… but playing him in cards for money is akin to waking up without your wallet.
He is the greatest card player in the world.
He has no idea what I’m talking about when I talk about liquidity… momentum… or value… but he beats the living hell out of me in games that I thought were chance.
