Dear Fellow Expat:

Greetings from County Baltimore.

39° 25' 13" N / 76° 40' 12" W

The Birds (Baltimore Orioles) couldn’t pull off a win yesterday.

They just got beat. That’s baseball.

It’s fair to chalk up that loss to inexperience. They have a young team and a manager playing in their first playoff series since 2014 (the 2016 loss was a play-in game – and I was too distracted as a Cubs season ticket holder to worry about what went wrong that year in Baltimore)

Brandon Hyde, the Orioles manager, was the bench coach for the Chicago Cubs when they won the World Series. But he’s not a situational guy. We didn’t bunt to try to tie the game.

He went for it in the 8th inning… and it didn’t work out. That’s okay.

The playoffs are essentially a crap shoot. Yes, there are favorites (yet all the high seeds lost yesterday… badly.)

There is timely hitting, timely pitching, and a lot of dumb luck.
