Dear Fellow Expat:
Well… dammit.
I couldn’t sleep again last night.
I went to bed around 9:30 pm but lay awake until 10:45 pm.
I went for a walk.
Jacksonville Beach in 31-degree weather is a bit surreal - but it’s not a factor to me.
Remember that I lived by a beach in Chicago.
But this was another form of cold. That type that gets in your distal, middle, and proximal phalanges. That makes your jaw freeze up. What was this?
The wind off the Atlantic. I’d never felt this before on this longitude… not even in Boston during the height of winter. The people of Halifax are laughing at me.
So, I returned and threw another layer on. I walked past a bar called Mango’s.
A man was screaming the song “Sweet Caroline” so loud into a microphone that I imagine everyone in that bar - near those speakers - has suffered catastrophic hearing loss.
Soon, I circled back to Margaritaville… the hotel where I stayed…
And all along the way, I had some thoughts.
